When the weeds grew to choke the beautiful petals? Was there understanding when the fields matured? Is that what led the land to lose its innocence? Nothing but the serenity of birds feeding?ĭid my small understanding cause the cracking?ĭid my little heart take advantage of it? Nothing but the purity of the sky preceding? Was it all those years ago that the Earth opened up?Īll those years ago that the rivers filled? They can like us, they can like us like us, or they can hate us.

But the reality behind those problems has no relationship to whether or not France (or Turkey, or Winnie Cooper) thinks we’re cool. And I realize there are problems with America, and I’m not necessarily sure if the United States is a good place or a bad place. It’s important to be a good country it’s not important to be a well-liked country. It’s important to be a good person it’s not important to be a well-liked person. At some point, people confused being liked with being good. This is why modern kids act like animals. Parents don’t act like parents anymore, because they mainly want their kids to like them they want their kids to see them as their two best friends. We’re like a nation of Kevin Arnolds being likeable is the only thing that seems to matter to anyone. And I’m starting to think that’s because too many Americans are dangerously obsessed with being liked. But our society will never get over this fear there will always be people in this country who are devastated by the premise of foreigners hating Americans in a macro sense. The kind of European who hates the United States in totality is exactly like the kind of American who hates Europe in totality both people are unsophisticated, and their opinions aren’t valid. It’s just that I’m not happy if they love us, either. Now, I am not saying that I’m somehow happy when people in other countries blindly dislike America.

Just enough to freeze her in that very momentīut the streets are too quiet for solitudeįrom Chuck Klosterman’s Don’t Look Back in Anger (Esquire, 2005) Just enough to be heard in this ghost town You Forget It in People by Broken Social Scene Artful acid folk: my favorite 2006 album. I love the avant-garde mixed with rock n’ roll. The Velvet Underground and Nico by the Velvet Underground This is the album I’ll listen to when I ever want to remember my college experience. The most artful rock I still have ever heard: many genres are represented here. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins An era defining album: it sounds better to me with each listen. About eight different genres represented beautifully. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor! Smith expanding his pain-soaked lyrics into more diverse musical forms. Beauty and Pain weaving seamlessly through every song.įrom a Basement on a Hill by Elliott Smith All nineteen songs are, at the very least, very good. It’s easy to forget what a great pop craftsmen Eno was. Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) by Brian Eno It has to be good when our greatest songwriter bears his soul. These songs remind me of some great times. If You’re Feeling Sinister by Belle and Sebastian My favorite breakup album: sad but not bitter. I love the passion and diversity of these songs. One of the best pieces of minimalism I’ve ever heard: truly unique. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin A perfect blend of the beautiful and harsh and usually on the same song. That is why I think this list is more important then a 20 favorite songs list. It’s rare, especially these days, to find an outstanding album.

These are simply the 20 albums that most make my heart flutter, my mind wonder and my being feel fulfilled. And no doubt there are some bands on this list who are not as good as some bands that are not on the list. There are, no doubt, better albums then the ones on this list. The following is a list of my 20 favorite albums.
